After months of "nothing", well not nothing.. I did renovate the master bedroom. I've finally figured out how to get past the point I was stuck on. The tray of the keyboard part was not flat. And I had looked into getting it flat by milling it with a plunge router. However I couldn't go down far enough accounting for the router table depth as well. Maybe I could've but I'd need a longer bit.

I was poking around on Facebook market place and found a local guy that does CNC work for a reasonable price. So I thought I'd give him a go and see if he can't mill the tray down flat and run a groove for the brackets. Well it all went about as well as I could've hoped:

I've also ordered some tools to cut some little channels for the wires. Still need to figure out how and where to mount all the switches to sense the key positions. Will have a crack at that in the next week.
